Observing Farm Animals differently
Ethology &
Animal Observation
at Sanctuaire La Garie
This page is intended for ethologists, researchers, students and partners interested in the study of farm animal behaviour.
Fostering a Space for
Ethological Observation
and Learning
Sanctuaire La Garie is a unique place.
It provides lifelong sanctuary to farm animals rescued from exploitation, neglect, abandonment or abuse.
Here, animals are no longer raised for production. They are no longer defined by an economic purpose.
Instead, they live in relatively stable social groups, across a large natural environment, with opportunities for social interaction, routines, individual choices, habits and time.
Over the years, relationships and behaviours emerge that are sometimes surprising and different from those commonly observed in environments shaped by productive constraints.
Because of this unique context, Sanctuaire La Garie has the potential to become a partner site, a place for observation, an educational immersion setting and a space for knowledge sharing.
We have therefore developed a Statement of Intent outlining our ambition to become a partner site for specialists in ethology and animal behaviour.
A place to deepen knowledge and to contribute to a better understanding of the sentience of farm animals.
This Statement of Intent is also an invitation.
An invitation to visit. To observe. To discuss. To contribute.
To imagine together what a multi-species sanctuary might bring to the study of farm animal behaviour.
